therapy for race based stress

let's connect

what is race based stress?

Race based stress or, racial trauma is the emotional and psychological pain members of the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) community can feel as a result of experiencing or witnessing racism and systemic racism.

Racial stress happens when someone is treated unfairly, disrespected, or made to feel unsafe or "less than" because of their race or ethnicity. It can derive from big, obvious things—like racial slurs or hate crimes—but also from more subtle experiences, like being spoke to in an undermining manner,  being treated differently at work or school, or hearing offensive jokes, etc. Even witnessing racism on the news or online can cause racial stress, especially when it happens repeatedly.

Let's talk

what to expect from therapy

Talk About the Experience Openly, With No Judgment

Having space to share your story—how racism has affected you—without being dismissed or told you’re "overreacting." I will listen and validate your feelings, while allowing you to name what’s happening.

Learn Coping Skills

You will learn practical skills to cope with the emotional and physical stressors.

Explore Your Identity and Build Resilience

If needed we will learn to reconnect with your racial and/or cultural identity, especially if racism has made you question their worth.

Finding the Right Therapist Matters

For race-based stress, it's often really helpful (and important) to have a therapist who:

  • Understands racism personally or professionally

  • Is culturally competent (they “get it” and you don’t have to explain every detail)

  • Or ideally, shares your cultural background—though that’s not always necessary

If a therapist dismisses race or avoids the topic, it can cause more harm.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at lisa@sassopsychotherapy.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

If you feel emotionally worn out from racism; you change how you behave to avoid racism (code switch); struggle with your self worth and/or identity; feel isolated and misunderstood; notice physical and/or emotional signs of stress, then therapy can help.

Our sessions together will help you to manage the stressors, so they don't cause you as much harm.

I am a Black, Jamaican therapist who understands the impacts of systemic racism, the very subtle micro racism experienced, the not so subtle racism experienced; and racial profiling etc.
